Comeback Medvedev Secures First Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hard courts
A revitalized Medvedev won his first trophy for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The athlete, a former number one, has endured a challenging season, winning just one win at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
The player's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-term mentor Cervara.
Currently collaborating with his coach and Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently advanced in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.
It is Medvedev's maiden championship since the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt since spring of 2023.
The win also indicates Medvedev has won 21 victories at twenty-one different tournaments.
"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to get a trophy is really nice," commented tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.
"This championship is in dedication of my child her name, because the first title I got when my child my daughter was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six finals, including in that event earlier this year.
His counter-punching approach and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had led observers to doubt if his ability to compete at the top level was over.
But the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and play assertively, supported by an improved serving game.
He came back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, taking four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.
The pair exchanged breaks in the second set before Moutet, attempting for his first ATP Tour title, took control to push for a decider.
Moutet defended four initial break points in a competitive third set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.
Suitably, the winner clinched the win with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
