This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
